Founded in 1927 in Osaka, Japan, by Manjiro Kondo—who previously worked for the industrial department of Singer—Yamato Sewing Machine Mfg. Co., Ltd. holds a highly prestigious and specialized place in the history of industrial sewing. The company successfully completed Japan's first domestically manufactured overlock machine in 1946. Since its inception, Yamato has focused deeply on solving the complex mechanical challenges associated with sewing knitted and stretchable materials. Yamato operates under the distinct philosophy of "deskilling" operations—meaning their machines are engineered so intricately that even inexperienced operators can achieve flawless, high-quality results immediately. They are credited with numerous world-first innovations, including the Auto Serging Unit in 1984, the first electronic button sewing and neck wrapping machine, and the first interlock machine with a top feeder. To better serve the South Asian manufacturing hub, Yamato established direct liaison offices in Delhi and Tirupur, India, ensuring strong regional support.
