The origins of Brother Industries, Ltd. trace back to 1908 when Kanekichi Yasui established a sewing machine repair business in Nagoya, Japan. In 1928, his sons, Masayoshi and Jitsuichi Yasui, successfully manufactured Japan's first chain-stitch sewing machine designed specifically for producing straw hats. The machine's exceptional durability significantly outperformed imported models, launching the company into full-scale manufacturing. They chose the brand name "Brother" to symbolize their cooperative spirit. By 1932, they had achieved the mass production of domestic home sewing machines. While Brother eventually grew into a massive global technology and electronics corporation—pioneering everything from high-speed dot-matrix printers to CNC machine tools—industrial sewing has always remained a foundational part of its DNA. In 2022, Brother celebrated a massive production milestone of 70 million sewing machines manufactured.
