CMAI Doubles Down: Sustainability Showcase and Trade Fair Signal India's Sourcing Push

CMAI is running two parallel plays this month — an Eco-Stitch sustainability hub at Bharat Tex and a 960+ brand trade fair in Mumbai — betting on both global and domestic demand.

CMAI Doubles Down: Sustainability Showcase and Trade Fair Signal India's Sourcing Push

The Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI) is making two simultaneous bets on where India's garment trade is headed. At Bharat Tex 2026, CMAI and the Global Alliance for Textile Sustainability (GATS) will unveil the Eco-Stitch Sustainability & Circularity Hub, built around the theme 'Sustainable, Circular and Competitive Bharat'. The pavilion is designed to walk global buyers through India's entire value chain — fibre, yarn, fabric, recycling, garment manufacturing, technology and traceability — through curated zones such as the India Impact Wall, Circularity at Scale, From Waste to Global Wardrobe, and a Material & Innovation Library.

The timing is deliberate. Global sourcing priorities have visibly shifted toward sustainability and traceability, and the Eco-Stitch Hub is explicitly framed as a response to that shift — an attempt to position India as a preferred destination as brands and retailers reassess where they place orders. The hub's Circular Bharat Forum will also serve as a business-matching platform connecting manufacturers, exporters, recyclers, technology providers and certification bodies under one roof.

Almost in parallel, CMAI is running the second phase of its 83rd National Garment Fair (NGF) in Mumbai from July 13 to 15, split across two venues — Women's Wear at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Goregaon and Men's Wear at MMRDA Grounds, BKC. More than 960 brands are participating, timed deliberately ahead of the festive season, when domestic retail buying accelerates.

Two tracks, one strategy

Read together, the two events show CMAI working both ends of the market at once: a global-facing sustainability narrative aimed at export buyers evaluating India as a sourcing hub, and a domestic trade fair built around volume and festive-season retail buying. Neither event carries hard export or investment numbers yet, but the intent is clear — India wants to be counted in the same conversation as buyers increasingly asking for recycled content, digital traceability and circular production models, while not losing ground on its bread-and-butter domestic wholesale trade.

For factory owners and production heads, the practical takeaway sits at the Eco-Stitch Hub's stated focus areas: recycled and natural fibres, resource-efficient manufacturing, circular production, and digital traceability. Buyers attending Bharat Tex are being explicitly primed to ask about these capabilities. Units that can demonstrate traceable inputs, energy-efficient processes and recycling-compatible production lines will have a structural advantage in sourcing conversations — those relying purely on price and lead time may find themselves increasingly out of step with what's being showcased as India's competitive pitch.
